With the beginning of space exploration and satellite technology, scientists began identifying the wealth of resources that exist beyond our planet. 

Indeed, the economic lure behind this venture is tremendous, with estimates suggesting that the precious metals available in space could reach staggering values. For reference, it is believed that Asteroid 16 Psyche alone harbours about $700 quintillion’s worth of precious metals. Beyond its financial promise, space mining also has the potential to revolutionise various sectors, such as aerospace, energy production, and environmental conservation. In particular, the technology developed for asteroid extraction could lead to significant advancement in materials science, propulsion systems, and even water recycling processes. 

Since the early 2010s, space mining has gained traction with the formation of companies like Planetary Resources and Deep Space Industries, which aimed to pioneer the technology necessary for asteroid excavation. In fact, these ventures followed a series of successful robotic missions that studied near-Earth asteroids, notably NASA’s OSIRIS-Rex mission, which aimed to collect samples from Asteroid Bennu. 

Recently, startup AstroForge has begun exploring and targeting M-type asteroids, which are rich in platinum group metals essential for clean energy technologies and other applications.

However, as it happens with the development of most industries, the path to space mining is fraught with challenges. The initial enthusiasm surrounding the concept faced reality checks, which companies discovering that their plans were overly ambitious and financially untenable. In addition, as interest in the field grows, so too do the financial, legal, and market concerns surrounding it. 

Field and Industry Applications

The applications of space mining are vast, spanning multiple sectors and holding the potential to revolutionise various industries. One of the most significant beneficiaries is the actual aerospace industry. As missions to explore Mars and beyond advance, the need for in-situ resource utilisation (ISRU) becomes increasingly apparent. 

Water extracted from asteroids can be converted into hydrogen and oxygen, serving as vital fuel for spacecraft and supporting human life during long-duration missions. This capability could dramatically reduce the need to launch materials from Earth, significantly reducing costs and enhancing the feasibility of deep-space exploration. 

In addition, academic and research institutions could see increased funding and interest in space sciences, leading to new discoveries and innovations that extend far beyond other industries, such as healthcare, construction, transportation, and telecommunications.

Another promising area is energy production, holding great potential for improving clean energy production on Earth. One major benefit is to secure a sustainable and abundant supply of rare earth elements (REEs), which are essential for technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, and electric vehicle batteries. 

Another significant advantage is the potential of harvesting Helium-3, a rare isotope found on the Moon, as a fuel for nuclear fusion. Helium-3 could provide a virtually limitless source of clean energy, generating power without the potentially harmful byproducts associated with traditional nuclear fission. 

Finally, one of the most compelling arguments for space mining is its potential to contribute toward sustainability. Traditional mining often leads to significant environmental degradation, including deforestation, habitat destruction, soil erosion, and water pollution. By sourcing materials from space, the negative environmental impacts associated with terrestrial mining could be significantly reduced. 

Furthermore, by diverting attention from Earth’s resources, space mining may help reduce the human and environmental toll of resource extraction, allowing for a more sustainable approach to meeting global resource demands. 

Challenges Ahead

Despite its vast potential, space mining faces significant challenges that could hinder its progress and implementation. One major obstacle is the high cost of technology development and space missions. The financial burden associated with launching spacecraft, developing mining equipment, and ensuring the safety of operations in the harsh environment of space can deter investment and stall progress. 

While advancements in reusable rocket technology, such as those pioneered by SpaceX have started to lower launch costs, the overall financial commitment remains substantial. The economics of space mining must account for the fact that the initial capital required for a single mission can be enormous. Additionally, the need for multiple launches to set up infrastructure, conduct exploratory missions, and transport mined materials back to Earth compounds these expenses.

Furthermore, there are substantial regulatory and legal hurdles to overcome. Indeed, the Outer Space Treaty of 1967 asserts that space is the province of all humankind and prohibits any national from claiming sovereignty over celestial bodies. 

Nonetheless, such existing international treaties present ambiguities regarding ownership and resource extraction in outer space. This lack of clear global legal frameworks creates uncertainty for companies seeking to invest in and operate space mining ventures. Likewise, the wide array of regulatory compliance and licensing requirements can create barriers to entry for smaller companies and startups, which may lack the resources to establish efficient compliance frameworks. 

Additionally, the technical challenges of resource identification and extraction in microgravity and the harsh conditions of space cannot be underestimated. Developing reliable methods for locating, extracting, and processing materials from asteroids will require significant advancements in technology and engineering. This issue is inherently related to funding. However, it goes beyond that – it involves the development of new technologies that have never been seen before.

In addition, locating resources may be quite challenging. Unlike Earth, where geological surveys and exploration techniques have been refined over centuries, identifying and characterising the composition of asteroids and other celestial bodies remain a largely uncharted territory.

With the potential to extract valuable materials from asteroids and celestial bodies, this venture could not only address pressing resource shortages on Earth but also pave the way for sustainable advancements in technology and clean energy. X Suspension Ruling

Brazil’s Supreme Court has recently reaffirmed the suspension of the social media platform X, operated by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. This decision follows the platform’s failure to adhere to a court order requiring the appointment of a legal representative in Brazil, a stipulation under Brazilian law.

Such X suspension court decision, initially issued by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, could have significant ramifications for corporate governance and the dynamics between global technology giants and sovereign nations. It also underscores the ongoing struggle to balance free speech with the responsibilities of managing social media platforms, resembling the earlier controversy surrounding the arrest of Telegram CEO Pavel Durov.

The discord between Mr. Musk and Brazil’s judiciary ignited in April 2024, when Justice Moraes directed X to suspend several accounts alleged to be disseminating disinformation. These accounts were largely linked to supporters of former right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro. Justice Moraes defended his decision as essential for safeguarding Brazilian democracy from the threats posed by fake news and digital militias. Mr. Musk decried these orders as censorship and an infringement on free speech, marking the onset of a protracted confrontation between the technology magnate and a prominent Brazilian judicial authority.

As tensions intensified, Mr. Musk chose to close X’s Brazilian office in August 2024, effectively ceasing operations in one of its key markets. Despite this, the platform remained accessible to Brazilian users, as Mr. Musk declined to appoint a new legal representative, a mandatory requirement for foreign entities operating in Brazil.

This defiance prompted Justice Moraes to impose an X suspension order in Brazil, mandating the Brazil’s National Telecommunications Agency to enforce the suspension within 24 hours. Additionally, Apple and Google were required to remove the X app from their app stores within five days. Anyone attempting to bypass the ban using virtual private networks (VPNs) would face daily fines of $9,000.

Today, the five-member panel of Brazil’s Supreme Court reached a majority decision to uphold Justice Moraes’ ruling. Specifically, Justices Flavio Dino and Cristiano Zanin joined Justice Moraes in forming the majority, despite Justices Luiz Fux and Carmen Lucia still needing to cast their votes.

Invisible Hand of AI Bias

AI bias does not appear out of thin air—it is often a reflection of the data fed into these algorithms. Think of AI as a chef. If you give the chef fresh, diverse ingredients, you are likely to get a balanced dish. However, if the pantry is stocked with expired, one-note items, the outcome will be… less than appetising.

One infamous example is facial recognition technology. These systems have been shown to perform poorly when identifying individuals with darker skin tones. Why? Because the datasets used to train these algorithms are often skewed, containing fewer images of people of colour. It is not that the AI is inherently racist – it is simply working with what it has been given. The result? Technology that is supposed to be neutral ends up perpetuating existing biases, leading to potentially harmful consequences in real-world applications.

However, when these systems are trained on historical hiring data that reflects a biased preference for certain demographics which can end up reinforcing those same biases. This leads to qualified candidates being overlooked, not because of their abilities, but because the algorithm learned to associate certain traits with success, even if those associations are based on flawed human judgments.

The ripple effects of AI bias can be far-reaching. Consider the criminal justice system, where algorithms are increasingly used to assess the likelihood of reoffending. If these systems are trained on data that reflects biases in arrest rates or sentencing, they can end up disproportionately flagging certain groups as high-risk. This can lead to harsher penalties, longer sentences, and a perpetuation of the very inequalities the system is supposed to correct.

In finance, biased AI can determine who gets approved for loans or mortgages. If an algorithm has been trained on historical data where certain communities were systematically denied credit, it could continue to deny them, effectively reinforcing economic disparities.

The problem is not just about fairness – it is about trust. If people believe that AI systems are rigged against them, they will be less likely to engage with them, further widening the gap between those who benefit from these technologies and those who are harmed by them.

In fact, this issue of trust extends to most domains and industries worldwide. For instance, in the crypto-asset community, the failure of projects or institutions has eroded consumer confidence multiple times, leading to skepticism about the viability and integrity of crypto-assets as a whole.

Addressing AI Bias

So, what is the solution? The good news is that awareness of AI bias is growing, and efforts to mitigate it are underway. However, it is not as simple as flipping a switch.

One approach is to ensure that the data used to train AI is as diverse and representative as possible. This means going beyond the obvious sources and actively seeking out data that reflects different demographics, experiences, and perspectives. It is about giving our AI chef a well-stocked pantry with ingredients from around the world, so the dish that comes out is rich and balanced.

Another key strategy is transparency. Companies developing AI systems need to be open about how their algorithms work, what data they are using, and what steps they are taking to address bias. This allows for external scrutiny and helps build trust among users. If AI is the wizard behind the curtain, it is time to pull that curtain back and show what is really going on.

Lastly, there is the human element. No matter how advanced AI becomes, it should never operate in a vacuum. Human oversight is crucial to catching and correcting instances of AI bias that might slip through. This means creating diverse teams of people who understand the potential pitfalls and are committed to steering AI in the right direction.

Conclusion

In the end, the question is not whether we can trust machines to be fair, but whether we can trust the humans behind those machines to prioritise fairness. AI has the potential to be an incredible force for good, but only if we are vigilant about the biases it can inherit and amplify.

The Worldcoin Project has stirred global debate due to its ambitious aim of creating a global digital identity system using biometric data. Developed by Worldcoin’s parent company, Tools for Humanity, the project incentivises users by offering crypto-assets in exchange for their iris scans.

The project, which revolves around using biometric data to create a unique “World ID”, has sparked privacy concerns in various countries due to the nature of its business model, reflecting issues that have become increasingly common for companies in recent years due to the nature of their business models. This time, Colombia’s Superintendence of Industry and Commerce (SIC) has now launched an investigation into the Worldcoin Project over potential violations of the country’s data protection laws.

How it Works

At the heart of the Worldcoin Project is the Orb, a biometric scanning device that captures the irises of users. The goal is to create a decentralised, global digital identity that provides proof of unique human identity without the need for revealing personal details. In exchange for this data, participants receive WLD tokens, Worldcoin’s crypto-asset. This system operates in 25 locations across Colombia, including major cities like Bogotá and Medellín.

While the offer of crypto-assets may seem like a lucrative deal for participants, the question remains whether users are fully aware of the potential risks associated with providing their biometric data. The Media, Telecoms, and Broadcasting sector has accumulated approximately €3,313.891,366 across 296 fines since the enforcement of the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This substantial figure highlights several critical issues. Firstly, this sector deals with a vast amount of personal data, including user behaviour, preferences, and communication records. The sensitivity and volume of this data significantly increase the risk and potential impact of breaches in data protection compliance. 

Additionally, companies in this sector are often high-profile targets for cyber-attacks. A single breach can affect millions of users, leading to hefty fines proportional to the severity and scale of the incident. Furthermore, given their visibility, media and telecom companies are under intense scrutiny from both the public and regulators. Failures in compliance are likely to be highly publicised and severely penalised to set an example. The intricate web of data sharing between broadcasters, advertisers, and service providers creates more opportunities for data mishandling and non-compliance with GDPR stipulations.

Following in second place, the Industry and Commerce sector has amassed €916.410,577  in fines across 463 incidents. The total fine amount is lower than that of the Media and Telecoms sector, but the higher number of fines indicates widespread compliance issues. This category encompasses a wide range of businesses from manufacturing to retail, each with different levels of data sensitivity and varying degrees of digital maturity, leading to a broad spectrum of compliance challenges.

The higher number of fines suggests that while breaches in data protection compliance may be frequent, they might not be as large-scale or as publicised as those in the media sector. Many incidents could involve smaller businesses with less stringent data protection measures.
